Evensong is arguably the most beautiful innovation provided by the Book of Common Prayer. It has a form and balance never achieved by any other service. Central to its structure are the two great canticles Magnificat and Nunc dimittis. It would take many records to demonstrate the various ways in which these words have been set. This one offers half a dozen, linked by a common factor of tunefulness. Stanford wrote his C major service instrumentally—that is to say, he wrote the bright chordal accompaniment and extracted the vocal parts from it. Walmisley's setting could be performed without accompaniment, yet blazes into life when the independent organ part is pitted against it. Wesley and Blair share a liking for flamboyance, Wesley allowing himself a greater time span (the clergy were probably asleep anyway—or so he might well have assumed). Wood is represented by a double-choir setting effective rather than inventive. Brewer's contribution bathes in the setting sun of the West Midlands. This rich anthology is presented with breath-taking skill and soul-stirring animation by one of the world's greatest choirs.
John Scott, who is the Cathedral's Sub Organist, holds his team on a tight rein as regards speed, but never misses the opportunity to punch hard. This produces a rich and noble blend, making the beauty of the quieter moments all the more appreciated. Christopher Dearnley, the Master of the Cathedral's music, chooses to enjoy the accompaniments, and who can blame him? They are such a joy to play. I wish the balance could have given us more detail of the organ part. I know it's frightfully difficult to get the engineering spot on in this building, and the choir really do sound superb. But much of Dr Dearnley's loving subtlety is passed over. Nevertheless, no lover of church music should miss an opportunity of acquiring this capsule of late afternoon splendour, recalling the unique emotion of hearing glorious singing in Wren's greatly-loved cathedral.'
