Author:
This is another well varied, generously filled disc, following on from the previous Continuum issue of Barry Anderson's electro-acoustic works ((CD) CCD1008, 7/90). As with that collection, I find the new one inspires more respect than musical satisfaction. Anderson played a major part in putting electro-acoustic music in Britain on the map and it may be that there were fine works to come from him at the time of his death in 1987; certainly there are intermittently enthralling sounds in ARC, completed shortly before his death. But the writing for the acoustic instruments, however integral it may be to the concept of the piece, strikes me as cliched and passe, as it does in the three Piano Pieces. The Electroacoustic Fanfare and Domingus are enjoyable in a rather more downmarket vein, and no doubt specialist collectors will find much of value here. But for the uninitiated in this medium I would strongly recommend Jonathan Harvey's Bhakti (NMC/SPNM (CD) NMCD001, 9/89) or George Benjamin's Antara (Nimbus (CD) NI5167, 10/89) in preference to Anderson's work. Continuum's presentation and recording quality are fine, though I should perhaps report that I tried three hi-fi set-ups without finding one that would cope with the subterranean gurglings of Piano Piece 1.'
