It is good to have chamber music on CD, particularly in performances so stylish and alive as these, but the more critical medium does bring a degree of aggressiveness in the sound that I had not noticed on LP. That impression is roused at the start, when with no warning tape hiss the first movement of K296 begins with such a bite of fortissimo. Compact Disc also brings out the slightly forward balance of Perlman's violin as against Barenboim's piano, but the extra realism and precision of placing make me worry about that even less than before. As with all chamber music on CD the absence of background is a particular blessing, and for those conscious of value for money the timing of 54 minutes is more than acceptable.'
