These were highly regarded versions when they were first issued, notable for the warmth of the playing in slow movements, with imaginative phrasing from strings and woodwind alike. Tempos are apt and the performances, using a relatively small band of players (but modern instruments, of course), are stylish as well as elegant. There is plenty of spirit too (the Minuets are particularly successful) and the special character of the first movement of the G minor comes over appealingly. The Jupiter is compulsive and powerful with both halves of the finale repeated to give the music a fine sense of scale. The analogue recordings have been effectively remastered; the sound has good projection and detail and the extra clarity has not resulted in the strings sounding too thin—though the original LP was a shade more full-bodied in effect.'
