Author:
While the 'authentic' approach to recent Mozart recordings has given much pleasure, the ECO make a convincing argument in every bar for the security of pitch, expression and dynamics which can be achieved using modern instruments in a modest-sized ensemble. Everything is delightfully clear with strings and woodwind ideally differentiated. Jeffrey Tate is now Principal Conductor of the ECO (and also at Covent Garden) and this coupling of Mozart's last two much-loved symphonies demonstrates virtues of controlled yet brilliantly expressive direction which should make each new disc in this projected Mozart cycle something to await with eager anticipation. Recorded balance is first class, and remains ideally detailed throughout the generous 64 minutes playing time.'
