Some things have inevitably changed since these recordings were first issued: The English Concert now plays with rather more freedom, their strings rarely sound so tonally edgy as they sometimes do here, and, no less to the point, there are now alternative versions of the various Vivaldi concertos, though Pleeth's remains the only one played on a period (Rubio reproduction) cello. However, despite a few passing blemishes these remain as good as any others and, hardly surprisingly, this is the only recording to offer this particular mix. If this is not enough there is the additional incentive of the concerto of C. P. E. Bach, of which there is no other recording; Pinnock sparkles and, if the music is less dramatic than some from the same pen, it still has surprises to spring. The CD sound is excellent and the playing time of over 53 minutes is reasonable.'
