Joan Chissell gave the LP a qualified but mainly enthusiastic welcome in April, and my reactions to the CD are similar, if rather more sharply polarized. That is, the playing of the A minor Sonata strikes me as inspired, going right to the heart of this extraordinary work; in the other two sonatas I find both slow movements a shade formalistic and lacking in spaciousness, whilst their outer movements, shapely, articulate and energetic though they are, do not quite carry the interpretative conviction displayed in the A minor.
But if CD seems something of an extravagance in view of such reservations, let me stress the overall excellence of the playing, the superb recording, and the fact that the performance of the A minor Sonata is simply one of the finest examples of Mozart piano playing on record.'
