The Cypriot-born pianist has spent much of 2006 celebrating Mozart’s 250th anniversary. These two discs form part of a continuing series covering Mozart’s complete solo piano works, which he also performed in a series of eight concerts at London’s Cadogan Hall. I wonder if his playing on those occasions was as dull as it is on these discs which, nevertheless, have the merit of providing the completist with even the most insubstantial shavings from the master’s bench, including, it is claimed, three Köchel numbers previously unrecorded: Zwei kleine Fugen, K154a, Kontretanz, K534 (in two versions), and Vier Kontretänze, Kdeest.

Tirimo also provides on the second disc the only currently available complete recording of the sketches made by Mozart in London at the age of eight. These consist of 39 themes and fragments varying in length from 5'19" to 0'41". That a child could write such elegant pastiche is certainly remarkable (occasionally, too, there are moments of quiet beauty such as No 7 in G major) but, overall, this is music for the curious to hear just once. There is nothing significant here.

Tirimo’s nasal breathing is closely observed, as is the piano’s pedal action, but what disappointed me most was the lack of imagination and tonal colouring displayed in the few masterpieces included here (Fantasie in D minor, Rondo in A minor, Adagio in B minor). Tirimo rises to no more than dogged, reliable reference library readings whereas Mitsuko Uchida, for example, offers an inspired series of mysterious, magical novellas.
