Alan Civil has recorded these concertos three times. The first set, the finest, dates from 1967 and was made with Kempe and the RPO. It is still available on LP and cassette on EMI Eminence at budget price. The 1973 performances with Marriner are thoroughly musical and enjoyably full of the detail which comes with familiarity, but they are somewhat blander too. The remastering has made the orchestral sound fresher and brighter (though slightly less natural) and the horn timbre has slightly more edge, though its tonal amplitude is unaffected. One can now, of course, get Dennis Brain's mono recordings in this same price range on EMI References, but the digital remastering does not flatter the Philharmonia strings. For a modern mid-price set this Philips disc is well worth considering.'
