Specialist collectors will be aware of two earlier Lyrita collections containing some of these pieces from Eric Parkin (10/72) and Iris Loveridge (5/60), both long unavailable and never transferred to CD. Happily, Parkin’s enterprising 1994 anthology of Moeran’s complete published piano oeuvre is still listed, and I’m not sure it is necessarily superseded by this ASV newcomer.

Una Hunt is at her confident best in the satisfyingly plotted Theme and Variations (1920) and ambitious Toccata (1921), striking a commendable balance between elegant rigour and intrepid emotional scope. Elsewhere, though, I find myself craving more in the way of supple tenderness and greater intimacy of feeling, an impression which the rather hard, airless recording does little to dispel.

In those ravishing nature-poems such as Summer Valley (1925), Stalham River and On a May Morning (both from 1921), Hunt sounds a bit strait-laced by the side of the wonderfully wise Parkin, whose generous rubato pays greater dividends in terms of limpid poetry and expressive warmth. Her experienced rival also brings just that crucial bit extra twinkling affection to extrovert numbers like Bank Holiday (1925) and ‘Burlesque’ from the Three Fancies (1922). Nor does the decidedly Baxian ‘Rune’ from the Two Legends (1923) quite generate its full quotient of slumbering mystery on this occasion.Any small niggles aside, however, there are some charming miniatures awaiting discovery here and this remains a very welcome survey. Una Hunt herself contributes a thoughtful booklet-essay.
