Fibonacci Sequence (The)
Olivier Messiaen, Composer
The main virtues of the Fibonacci Sequence are emotional concentration, attention to detail and – thanks to a first-rate recording – finely balanced textures throughout. The movements with the most strongly delineated rhetoric project a powerful sense of dramatic tension: but there’s a risk of exaggerating expressive contrast, so that the strings play the long, slow melody in the second movement with a bleached tonal quality that makes it seem curiously detached. At the other extreme the movement for solo clarinet has expressive nuances to spare – so many incidental details that the effect is distinctly mundane.

Messiaen was at his most uncompromisingly theological in the meditations for cello and piano and violin and piano. The cello movement here is very fine, with just the right amount of implacably sentimental fervour to offset the pungent dissonances. The melodic line in the violin movement is beautifully projected but the tempo is surely much too fast, and as one result the pianist has difficulty in ensuring that the second chord of each repeated rhythmic pair sounds out as precisely as the first. Add the fact that the disc’s playing time is on the short side, with no other music, and it’s difficult to place this issue among the top contenders in a crowded field.
