Even with a bonus of a strong, dramatic account of the Ruy Blas Overture this disc is not over-generous in length, and it is a pity that Weller has omitted two brief items from what is billed as a ''complete'' version of the Midsummer Night's Dream music. The Royal Scottish Orchestra play very neatly throughout the programme, the recording is good, and Weller conducts competently, though ''Ye spotted snakes'' is taken too quickly: this places the accomplished Alison Hagley and Louise Winter under quite severe pressure, and the charm of this number is lost. The Scherzo, on the other hand, is taken at too sedate a tempo, and the ''Wedding March'' sounds rather heavy. By and large Weller does not achieve the delightfully eager, wide-eyed quality found in the score by Jeffrey Tate on EMI, though Tate's version is also incomplete and poor value in terms of playing time. Kurt Masur on Teldec does not show quite the same imagination as Tate, but he conducts a strong, characterful account of the complete score. His well-recorded version also has the advantage of spoken excerpts from the play itself, and this very much helps to place each musical item in its proper context.'
