Composed in 1875, two years after the better-known Marie-Magdeleine, to a text by Louis Gallet (librettist of Thais among many other operas) Eve is an early instance of Massenet tackling one of his favourite themes, the tug of conscience between the sensual and the spiritual.
This live performance gives a good idea of the work, the style veering between a Gounod-esque piety and a riotous finale in which Adam and Eve are condemned to damnation by a chorus representing the Voice of Nature.'
