With this release, Jean-Louis Charbonnier completes Marais’s third book of Pièces de viole. He has now recorded 13 Marais CDs since 1991 but still has the monumental first and second books to go.
Marais was born in 1656, a century before Mozart. He lived to 72 and left us an astonishing legacy of solo viol music and operas. Once a protégé of Lully, later a teacher in Paris and favourite court musician at Versailles, he commanded both respect and affection.
Charbonnier is devoted to Marais. An accomplished viol player and much loved teacher himself, he has been studying the Pièces de viole for 35 years. Playing on an instrument by Pierre Jacquier, he produces a lovely sound, but his performances sadly lack sparkle. As if to compensate, Charbonnier and his colleagues vary the continuo instrumentation from one phrase to the next and between first and second statements of sections. Sometimes it is cumulative: pieces begin with one instrument and gradually incorporate others; elsewhere it is less predictable. I know of no historical justification and found this practice disconcerting, not only when it occurred within movements but also between them.
Even more than the first two books, the third is heavily annotated with left-hand ornamentation and expressive bowing, notably swells with which Marais created a remarkable array of effects both melodic and harmonic. Charbonnier makes rather less of them than other players; it would be interesting to know why. If it is comprehensiveness you require, this series of recordings will serve.
