Symphony No. 4 |
Gustav Mahler, Composer
Chicago Symphony Orchestra Georg Solti, Conductor Gustav Mahler, Composer Kiri Te Kanawa, Soprano |
Author: Richard Osborne
I reviewed this performance in some detail last month. It is the only CD version of the Fourth available at present in the UK catalogue, and as such can be broadly recommended. The added immediacy of the orchestral image makes the reading seem rather less urbane that it does on LP, but in terms of the articulation of some inner detail the CD in marginally preferable; it is also easier to reproduce clearly. In addition, there is the added advantage of the guarantee of permanently silent surfaces in the slow movement and in the coda of the fourth movement. Offsetting this is the new clarity with which CD points up Solti's anticipatory grunts on upbeats. I still can't hear the second violins at the start of bar 17 of the slow movement.'
