The ability and artistry of the Labeques as a two-piano team is well established. Liszt's arrangement of his Two Episodes from Lenau's ''Faust'' was actually for piano duet, but it works well when played on two instruments. However, I much prefer the second of them in its solo piano form as the first Mephisto Waltz (there are many textual differences in this version), while the declamatory first Episode outstays its welcome. I confess too to finding the Reminiscences de Don Juan flashy and (as Busoni and the pianist David Wilde have also thought) out of tune with the Mozartian source of the material, but in its own terms it perhaps succeeds. The playing itself throughout is persuasive enough, however; and though the recording could have more brilliance and the CD is not lengthy, this transfer of a 1983 Paris recording should not disappoint admirers of these skilful sisters.'
