Author:
List is a composer who always seems to bring out the best in Karajan. Although the recording sessions for this collection took place over a period of some 15 years there is remarkable consistency of style in the performances. Karajan's conducting is everywhere full of imaginative touches and he inspires playing which is not only of the superlative quality we expect from this great orchestra but is also fresh, alert and has an abundance of energy and spirit. The Hungarian Fantasia is an ideal vehicle for Shura Cherkassky's commandingly brilliant style and effortless virtuosity: although the recording is here a quarter-of-a-century old the piano tone is good. In fact all the recordings have come up well and are enjoyable to listen to even if they do not of course quite rival the best of today. It was sensible of DG to devise a playing programme which provides plenty of contrast and this is indeed a most enjoyable set.'
