These are comparative versions chiefly for Liadov's most popular works. In common between the two records are Baba-Yaga, The enchanted lake, Kikimora and the Op. 49 and Op. 55 Polonaises. The earlier Gunzenhauser record includes also the Op. 8 Intermezo, the Op. 21b Ballade the Op. 19 Mazurka, Nenie, and the Fragment from The Apocalypse, which is really a better selection of the music of this most agreeable composer than the rather pointless (out of context) fanfares and the tiny folk-song pieces. However Batiz's record does find room for The musical snuff-box: Stravinsky, who was very fond of Liadov, described him as ''a darling man, as sweet and charming as his own Musical snuff-box'', and felt sure that he was more relieved than offended when Diaghilev withdrew The Firebird commission from notoriously indolent Liadov (whose energies had given out once he had bought the manuscript paper for the job) and passed it to Stravinsky. ''He was a shortwinded composer, and could never have written a long and noisy ballet like The Firebird''. On the evidence of Liadov's best pieces, one can see why Diaghilev was drawn to him—there is much in his music of Stravinsky himself—and can also see the point of Stravinsky's comment. The enchanted lake is a beautiful piece, a study in static harmony that curiously anticipates ''Farben'', the third of Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces.
Liadov was, as Stravinsky observes, essentially a miniaturist, and there is charm in the minuscule pieces that make up the Eight Russian folk-songs. I would not myself give them preference over the works particular to Gunzenhauser's record; and there is something more direct, more idiomatic about his performances where Batiz's, for all their vigour and enthusiasm, are somewhat more self-conscious. On the other hand, the ASV recording is stronger (it is by the excellent Brian Culverhouse), and the Marco Polo recording does not always do full justice to Liadov's skilful hand with the orchestra. Collectors of Russian rarities will want both records, if choice must be made, I think those who have already acquired the Gunzenhauser need lose no sleep.'
