Alfie Boe has gained plaudits not least as Camille in The Merry Widow at the Coliseum. It’s perhaps a surprise, then, that the two numbers from that work here are the soprano’s “Vilia” and a solo version of the Act 3 love duet. Yet it’s also an indication of the wider audience at whom this recital is aimed. In the lightness of shading in “Vilia” there’s anyway plenty of excitement, as also in the ringing upper notes throughout the recital, even if not all notes are quite perfectly formed.

Boe’s voice has a lightness and brittleness that perhaps makes it more appropriate for Lehár’s early works than for the later ones with more mature-sounding heroes. The most serious and dramatic numbers here, such as “You are my heart’s delight”, “Friends, this life is the life for me!” and “Just believe it’s true” don’t really suit the voice as well. Yet, in a way very different from Richard Tauber’s style, other favourites such as “Girls were made to love and kiss”, “Oh maiden, my maiden” and the beautiful Frasquita Serenade are very real successes, with the right touch of bravado assisted by imaginative pacing from conductor Michael Rosewell and full value given to Lehár’s orchestral colouring by the Scottish Opera Orchestra.

In total, the recital should appeal not just to Boe’s committed fans. Indeed, few British tenors might have been expected to pull off such a recital of Lehár in English quite so admirably.
