These two quartets, the second much shorter and to my ears more rewarding than the first, are the only chamber works by Kodaly so far to appear on CD and will be welcomed for that reason. That said, it must be conceded that they remain overshadowed by the great quartets of Kodalys Hungarian contemporary Bartok, though the performances by the eponymous players are very fine. The recording is acoustically dry but admirably clear in tone and the stereo layout is about ideal.'
