A well-chosen trilogy, yet performances are no more than adequate. Cowell’s Symphonic Set has flashes of inspiration to offset passages of dreariness. Barber’s heartfelt scena is strongly, but not always subtly projected by Hohenfeld. Somary treats the Ives as a nostalgic period piece – affectionate but unsymphonic, which it patently isn’t.'
