I suppose this is bound to be regarded as a disc of flute music by Hindemith‚ with some fillups by his rather younger and now almost forgotten contemporary Karl Höller‚ and on the booklet Höller’s name (no relation to York Höller‚ by the way) appears in much smaller type. But despite the charm of Hindemith’s smaller pieces and the distinction of his Sonata (in which sombre reflectiveness and an unexpected march intrude upon gracious neoBaroque lyricism – all these moods expertly picked up by Relats and Masó)‚ anyone acquiring this collection is likely quite soon to regard it as a Höller recital with fillups by Hindemith. Höller was clearly influenced by his more famous senior‚ but his lyricism is often gentle and distinctly Gallic in flavour. His counterpoint is not only accomplished but genially enjoyable and he has a fine lyrical gift‚ most noticeable in the long lines of his slow movements but evident also in the freshness of his admirably concise quicker ones. Even in a short movement he provides entertaining variety – the brisk scherzo of his Second Piano Sonatina encloses a chordal but lyrical trio‚ the cheerful finale of the Second Flute Sonata pauses for an appealingly hesitant interlude. But it is in his slower pieces that he rises to his full stature‚ especially in the fine ‘Fantasia’ of the First Flute Sonata‚ its long improvisatory phrases supported by a refrainlike chordal sequence. Relats and Masó seem enthralled to have discovered him‚ and they play his music with enjoyment as well as skill. Relats has an attractive‚ pastel tone‚ Masó is a very musical‚ positive partner and‚ not only in the solo Sonatina‚ plays with great perceptiveness. I am grateful to them for introducing me to Karl Höller‚ and would be glad to hear more of him.
