The oldest music on this disc is Chilcott’s 1993 four-part suite Even Such is Time, here receiving its premiere complete recording. Each song is a little gem, deceptively simple, perfectly poised and bespoke for the King’s Singers’ unique blend. Whitacre’s Alone provides harmonically richer fare, with a brief nod to the Shearing-flavoured ‘locked hands’ style. Even more delicious is his heart-stoppingly beautiful matrimonial ode This Marriage, possibly the finest item on the CD.
The Concordia Choir of Moorhead, Minnesota, founded in 1920, contribute two items on their own, recorded in 2003: Lauridsen’s modern classic O magnum mysterium (beautifully controlled and shaped) and Whitacre’s astonishingly gripping Cloudburst, which suffers an unfortunate drop in pitch, compounded by the piano’s sour tone at the end. When the two groups combine, however, all is well. The Stolen Child is preceded by a new prelude (a setting of Poe’s Alone) which atmospherically sets the scene for Yeats’s ‘woodland faeries’. The juxtaposition of the King’s Singers’ closely placed authoritative tone and the larger group’s more distant soothing breadth works wondrously well.
All of the music on this disc is beguilingly beautiful and worthy of widespread enjoyment. Do try it.
