After Ponchielli chasing hippos, Dukas pursuing a dare-devil apprentice, Mussorgsky fraternizing with a bunch of demons and Bach thundering down an open grave, it's again time for the 'greats of yore' to revisit Walt Disney – not via the screen, but by clowning around with some Disney tunes. Kids will know most of them (although this kid didn't) and the arrangements themselves – by Donald Fraser – range between the ingenious (Brahms ruminating over Mary Poppins, quartet-style) and the frankly obscure (''A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes'' and very far from the stated Grieg model).
Fraser employs a wide range of instrumental timbres: ''Heigh-Ho'', for example, finds Mozart in 'flute quartet' mode, while ''Colours of the Wind'' has Dvorak sorting among clippings from the New World Symphony but unable to focus his true style. ''Second Star to the Right'' makes a passable shot at sounding like Tallis (it's quite delightful even in its own right), although ''I Wanna Be Like You'' is more a generalized Latin-American than specifically Heitor Villa-Lobos. ''With a Smile and a Song'', ''Under the Sea'', ''Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?'' and ''When You Wish Upon a Star'' (can I really be writing this for Gramophone?) pay fairly conventional homage to Chopin, Scott Joplin, Johann Strauss and Richard Strauss respectively; ''Little April Shower'' recalls a certain Handelian Harmonious Blacksmith and ''Main Street Electrical Parade'' follows Vivaldi among two guitars. ''Can You Feel the Love Tonight?'' seems to fall midway between Tchaikovsky's Fourth Suite and Fourth Symphony – but had Aladdin's Prince Ali (all brass and percussion) not included pertinent references to Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, I doubt that I would have guessed the Bartokian connection. Ali's entrance sounds more like Fafner's, but I suppose it all adds to the fun. Fraser's arrangements work best where a tune's profile fits the style of its adopted composer, as in Johann Strauss and Joplin. Prokofiev's ''Winnie the Pooh'', however, seems to fall way off target – at least to these ears.
With good recording, fairly good playing (albeit with a somewhat limp-sounding ECO) and useful, 'young people's' annotation, this CD will make for a pleasant party-time diversion. As to bothering with it after Christmas, that's another matter. I suspect that by then, the jokes will have worn rather thin.
