Author:
I was again struck by Isabelle van Keulen's celestially fresh tone. For some reason the excellent band that supports her sounds heavier than it did on LP, too sumptuous for what is after all early Mozart. The Philharmonia on the Muti/EMI disc also sound too numerous, but Anne-Sophie Mutter plays with such irresistible verve and enchanting quality that it is hard not to put her disc at the top, even though (unlike van Keulen) she is oddly reluctant to add brief cadenzas at the pause marks; in particular bar 58 in the slow movement cries out for (and doesn't get) a few notes to link the widely-separated keys. But the best balance is to be found on Iona Brown's Argo disc; the band must be smaller than on the other two and just right for this charming lightweight music. Brown plays the solo line beautifully, but the other two soloists produce even lovelier sounds.'
