For her second two-CD Haydn album Ragna Schirmer ventures far from the beaten track, imaginatively interspersing substantial and familiar masterpieces with a string of enlivening miniatures and including the E minor Sonata No 19 (rediscovered in its present form as late as the middle of the last century). Such a sense of rich enterprise and inclusiveness is a delight from start to finish, particularly when complemented by Schirmer’s immaculate dexterity and no less impeccable taste and musicianship.

By her own confession Haydn is “an affair of the heart”. She shows the finest sense of gravity in Sonata No 50’s central Largo e sostenuto (modestly dismissed by the composer as “a little laborious but with much feeling”), relishes the twists and turns of the first variation on the Austrian/German national anthem in the G major hymn variations, or the stops and starts of Sonata No 59’s finale.

Again, her poise and expertise make you doubly aware of the way 18th-century convention and style (never more so than in the 12 St Catherine’s Day minuets) are enlivenend by Haydn’s twinkling wit and volte face humour. Even the most innocent idea is never safe from his propensity for mischief and surprise. All repeats are generously and faithfully observed with discreet and always stylish embellishments added on repetition. All these finely recorded performances are models of musical grace and resilience.
