This CBS compilation would seem an attractive proposition: it includes what most music-lovers would regard as three out of four of Haydn's best concertos (the First Horn Concerto being the missing work). Malcolm Macdonald praised the original issue and thought Marsalis stylish, with the slow movement of the Trumpet Concerto ''a delight''. His simple presentation is certainly attractive and the relaxed yet spectacular bravura is especially impressive in the finale. Yet I find Gerard Schwarz's performance on Delos more commanding, with the Andante warmer in its lyrical feeling, than with Marsalis on CBS. The gentleness of Yo-Yo Ma's approach to the Cello Concerto makes an agreeable contrast and this is a performance of undoubted distinction, full of subtlety. But Lin's account of the Violin Concerto is rather lacking in that quality. It is clean and direct, but entirely without charm in the engaging slow movement which the youthful Isabelle van Keulen plays so seductively (yet guilelessly). She is an altogether more imaginative artist and the Philips recording has rather greater ambient bloom, though the CBS sound throughout has excellent clarity and sharp presence.IM
