Julian Lloyd Webber gives a creditable performance of these concertos in which he very ably directs the orchestra himself; the ensemble does not appear to suffer. The D major Concerto is not the well-known one Yo-Yo Ma has recorded (he too directs the band, the same band), and it has not appeared in the Gramophone Classical Catalogue before. Grove lists it as a ''doubtful or spurious'' work, perhaps by Constanzi, and the sleeve-note seems to imply that Lloyd Webber himself arranged the string accompaniment. The slow movement is unusually substantial, and it does not sound much like Haydn to me, but it is very well-worth hearing. The attractive finale contains much the longest string of sequences I ever remember in a classical work. Yo-Yo Ma plays the C major faster than Julian Lloyd Webber, with a lighter touch and with more even tone. I prefer his performance as will you if you also want Haydn's best-known cello concerto. But if you fancy an attractive novelty on the other side, you may prefer the new version, though the balance does favour the soloist a little too much for my taste. I was, however, less aware of this when listening to the excellent CD version.'
