The choice here lies perhaps more in what these three recordings offer than in how it is played. In no case is it entirely satisfactory. The Water Music falls naturally into three suites, the playing order of which, pace Chrysander, should surely sandwich the gentler (over-dinner) G major between the louder, more open-air F and D majors. In order to suit the LP medium, and to make room for the Royal Fireworks Music, the ASMF omitted several movements and followed the order G, D, F, the latter a deviation that might have been—but is not—avoided in the CD format. One thus gets less than the whole, and in the wrong order. The other two recordings offer all the movements but place the suites in the published but unconvincing order, ending with G major. All three CDs have admirably clear sound, with brightly festive trumpets, but in both this department and in that of crisp performance, the SCO and Gibson on Chandos retain the edge.'
