For 30 years Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was one of the most famous pianists of his day, greatly admired by his colleagues (hence ''The Pianists' Pianist''), and renowned for his style and technique, though he was largely self-taught. Yet he remains an enigmatic figure, since it is said that a nervous disposition prevented him from achieving his best in the concert hall, and he was certainly no more at ease in the recording studio: his career, in fact, came to an abrupt end in 1930 when he suffered a stroke during a recording session.
To evaluate a pianist who only played at his best in private among his friends is difficult. A very mixed impression is conveyed by his records. The first APR set contains all Godowsky's recordings for English Columbia, made between 1928 and 1930, and his only recordings of longer works. Some say that his best recorded performance is that of Grieg's Ballade, where he certainly conveys the work's elegant, wistful charm and beauty, and where he brings out the nature of each variation with great subtlety. Yet, as Bryan Crimp's excellent discography of these UK sessions reveals, the very next day after the Grieg, Godowsky made a recording of Schumann's Carnaval which is technically very poor and shows little feeling or depth of interpretation. The hectic manner in which he drives through some of the episodes has no connection with Schumann at all. The Beethoven sonata is by contrast quite unidiosyncratic, still not technically immaculate, but quite impressive. But here are those Godowsky traits which tend to emerge in his recordings—a certain aloofness, a reluctance to be committed, and a slight rhythmic insecurity. And since Godowsky's basic rhythmic pulse is often not strong, then it follows that such rhythmic variations he employs do not make their maximum effect. In the Chopin sonata there is, however, some stronger playing, and a more pungent use of phrase and rhythm, while the Nocturnes are quite eloquently played. The transfers in this set sound somewhat confined and lacking in presence, with top frequencies rather ironed out.
The second set is particularly valuable in that it contains a large number of previously unpublished recordings and variant takes from Godowsky's earlier US Columbia and Brunswick sessions between 1913 and 1926, plus the fateful last 1930 UK Columbia, unpublished, recording and a private, post-stroke acetate. Here one gets a better sense of the younger Godowsky's renowned technique, for there is undoubtedly some excellent playing to admire. But again, there is often a controlled, detached quality in the performances, not much wit or charm, a lack of sheer energy and electricity. All the early recordings were of short pieces, some of them fairly insubstantial encore trifles. Again, I found the transfers rather compressed and muffled.
Serious piano collectors owe Bryan Crimp and his American colleagues a considerable debt for having made so many rare and previously unheard items available, since an enormous amount of work must have been involved. From a purely historical point of view these two sets are invaluable in allowing us to hear at such length a legendary figure from the past.'
