Glazunov was a choreographer's dream. Listening to this generously compiled super-suite (24 numbers, playing for nearly 56 minutes), even if you have never experienced Petipa's choreography you can almost reconstruct it in your mind's eye. One does not really need to be told that the third variation in Act 2 is a struttingly virtuoso solo for a male dancer with a spectacularly difficult leap at the end, or that Raymonda herself enters in Act 1 executing capriciously nimble steps with that slight relaxation of the foot from en pointe that is known as a trois quarts. I find that I can almost see the scenery, as well: a crowded stage filled with dancers in a thoroughly Russified, balletified version of medieval costume for the luscious Grande valse, something much more exotic and glittering for the later Valse fantastique, a premonition of Bakst's gorgeous orientalism in the sumptuously heady Grand pas d'action. There is surely moonlight and a fountain playing in the brief adagio that precedes Glazunov's evocation of a rather Slavonic Italy in La romanesca, and can one not even visualize the stage lighting, greenish-white on dazzling white lawn, as Raymonda dances with a dream-vision of her betrothed (poised and sensuous violin solo over Alberti figures in the clarinets) in the Grand adagio? That, I suspect, is the answer to those who would say that Glazunov's ballet music does not stand up outside the theatre so well as Tchaikovsky's does: it brings the theatre effortlessly with it. And there are moments where Glazunov can even challenge comparison with Tchaikovsky's almost symphonic grandeur in music for the dance. I am thinking of the Act 3 Entr'acte (played here as a finale to the whole suite), whose fine string melody has both nobility and passion to it, and whose dramatic thrust continues through the brightly glittering middle section (a passage that Prokofiev must have had at the back of his mind when he came to write Cinderella). There are plenty of luscious tunes here, a great deal of vivid orchestration and, it must be said, a generous allowance of hokum and of atmosphere that, like painted scenery, does not bear close inspection, but what glamour, what dazzle, what a reek of grease-paint and resin!
And what a performance! Have I ever said that the SNO lack the last trace of sumptuousness in their string section? I take it all back: the sheer lushness of string sound is one of the most alluring things about this performance, that and the richly deployed colour and the marvellously satisfying fullness of the climaxes. The CD is a bit more successful in conveying these (there is a certain pleasure to be obtained from observing a crescendo proceeding far beyond the point at which one expects either distortion or cautious compression) but the LP is very good as well. Strongly recommended to the stage-struck, to the self-indulgent and to anyone whose taste for mixed soft centres has not been extinguished by the gravity of adulthood.'
