The title of the album, ''He Loves And She Loves'' from Funny Face, happens to be one of its treasures: a classic case of just how simple the way is to immortality—if you can find it. Repetition is the key to this number's memorability: a single rhythmic figure works like hypnosis on the listener, the melody insinuates its way into the subconcious—and a standard is born. In the main, the best of these songs are the most familiar. Some, one just knows, would score better in context: point numbers like ''Oh, so nice'' and ''Feeling I'm falling'' from Treasure Girl, ''Hangin' around with you'' from Strike Up The Band, ''The half of it, dearie, blues'' and ''Little jazz bird'' from Lady Be Good!—all are charmers, flippant, 'Broadway candies' guaranteed to enliven a flagging second act but unlikely to invite too many repeated hearings in the privacy of one's living room. Or perhaps I merely speak for myself.
There are exceptions. ''Isn't it wonderful?'' from Gershwin's 1924 London show Primrose is a little gem, virtually unknown, an elegant, oh-so-English melody with a hint of ecstasy in the final phrases as our 'English Rose' gives in to less than chaste thoughts of her first love. Broadway leading-lady Judy Kaye, so winning in Koch's Arias and Barcarolles album (6/90), sells it completely. What a versatile artist she is, sexy and vampish with just the right feeling for bluesy innuendo in ''Nice work if you can get it'', appropriately tart with both the lyric and 'squawky' one-phrase tune of ''My cousin in Milwaukee'', and best of all, braving the memory of Helen Morgan in that
