Author: Ivan March
I agree with MH who reviewed the LP version that Mata does not so readily identify with the music of Gershwin as do Bernstein (especially) or Previn. Indeed, I find the account of An American in Paris rhythmically flaccid while the famous Russell Bennett arrangement becomes simply a selection of good tunes—it can be made to knit together with more vitality than this. The sound is richly atmospheric but lacking in dramatic dynamic contrast. Some of the gentler music in the Porgy and Bess symphonic picture undoubtedly displays that magical digital transluscence, but otherwise this is a disappointing issue.'
