Before during and indeed for a short time after the war it was quite common to hear Lieder sung in English translation. Then, with the advent of so many German artists coming to this country, native ones decided more often than not to perform the genre in the original. What probably accelerated the changeover was the stilted, often Victorian quality of the English translations. Of late Leslie Minchin has ventured new English versions of a large number of Lieder, many of them far from the familiar ones, and the pleasing results can be heard on this enjoyable issue.
Minchin's texts flow naturally with the music, have no false stresses and wherever possible retain the vowel sounds of the original, so that very often you feel that the songs have been set in English, and that's the highest praise I can give. Here they have been loosely grouped into two sections, the first being ''The Seasons of the Year'', the second ''Daytime and Night''. The performances are shared between Neil Mackie and his wife Kathleen Livingstone. As we know from several discs, the tenor's tone is sweet, his style unaffected, his line exemplary and his phrasing expressive. Above all, he brings a sense of creative spontaneity to everything he utters, and that is particularly true here. I like his simple fresh approach to Mendelssohn's ardent Venetian gondola song, the elegiac urgency of Schubert's Autumn, and the gentle, plaintive tone of his The rose ribbon. His keen articulation and inner feeling in Morning greeting makes one want to hear a complete Maid of the Mill from him. Then there are out of the way pleasures such as Brahms's The Sleep-walker, a bitter-sweet Lied of tender loveliness, sung in a like fashion and I admired, too, Schubert's little-known Evening song of the huntsman.
Kathleen Livingstone shares her husband's gifts of sure legato and a sense of placing words, but her readings are too often vitiated by unsteady and sometimes edgv tone. She is at her best in a touching account of Wolf's The forsaken little servant (once appearing in a telephone mishearing of one of Cardus's notices as ''the forsaken civil servant''!). The pair sing two duets Brahms's Down in the valley and Schuben's graceful Light and Love. John Blakely's accompaniments are nicely matched to the singer's style. The recording is well balanced. Texts are supplied but no notes.'
