It’s hard to imagine a more joyous way to celebrate the Gershwin centenary than with these discs, packed with a treasure-trove of performance and booklet-note documentation that are models of authority and expertise.
“George and Ira Gershwin in Hollywood” includes some very rare key performances drawn from all the Hollywood studios where a Gershwin credit rolled. Included are Dick Haymes and Betty Grable in charming performances of two duets from Gershwin’s posthumous score, The Shocking Miss Pilgrim (1947), Astaire in “He loves and she loves” from Funny Face (1957) – produced at Paramount 20 years after the composer’s death and 30 years after the show’s Broadway premiere – and a heady mixture of numbers from the Gershwin biopic Rhapsody in Blue (1945), that begins with a ten-minute “Overture” orchestrated and conducted by Ray Heindorf. Also from Rhapsody are “135th Street blues”, a quasi-operatic number and prototype for such pop ephemera as “Tenement Symphony”; a magnificently sung “Summertime” from Anne Brown, the original Bess in Porgy and Bess; Al Jolson recreating “Swanee”, Gershwin’s first hit song; and the title-song of Delicious, an early Fox musical that brought the Gershwin brothers to Hollywood in 1931 – its subsequent box office failure kept them away for five years until they returned to write a collection of classic scores for Astaire and Rogers at RKO. Though Astaire came to be known as every songwriter’s favourite singer, he and Rogers share the vocal honours in an effervescent account of “Let’s call the whole thing off” from Shall We Dance (1937). Ira without George is represented by Astaire singing “You’d be hard to replace” from The Barkleys of Broadway (1949), where the inclusion of the verse makes a much stronger case for Harry Warren’s melody, and “In our United State” from Give a Girl a Break (1953), where a young Bob Fosse sings and hoofs to Burton Lane’s melody.
Both albums contain brilliantly executed big band performances, with Artie Shaw and his orchestra letting their hair down in “Oh lady be good” from the Warner Bros short Artie Shaw’s Symphony in Swing (1939), and Tommy Dorsey with arrangers Sy Oliver and Axel Stordahl contributing greatly to the success of the 1943 remake of Girl Crazy, a soundtrack that contains much more of the original 1930 Broadway score (familiar from Crazy for You) than one might expect. In this, the fourth of the Garland/Rooney pictures produced by Arthur Freed, both stars are on top form in a brilliantly lit and full-bodied CD transfer enriched with vocal arrangements by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and orchestrations by Conrad Salinger. No expense seems to have been spared bringing out these discs, and surely no one can quibble at the full price asked. AE
