Author: John Duarte
Guillaume Morlaye (1510?-589.) was a man of many parts: a player and teacher of the viol and lute, a composer, a retailer of instruments, strings and engravings, a moneylender to engravers, and at one time caught up on the fringe of slave-trading. He may, together with Albert de Rippe (his teacher), Adrian Le Roy and Robert Ballard be regarded as one of the most important French lutenists of his time; his works for the lute and guitar were each published in four books and appear also in Phalese's Luculentum Theatrum Musicum (1568).
Both the lute and guitar were at that time in the early stages of evolution: Morlaye's pieces were written for a six-course lute and a four-course (one single, three double) guitar with re-entrant tuning. The repertory consisted of dances, fantasias, sets of variations and intabulations of vocal music (here by Sandrini, Magdalain and Arcadelt). It is remarkable that Morlaye was able to write quite demanding quasi-contrapuntal fantasias and to adapt vocal works so successfully for the small resources of the four-course guitar, an instrument with no genuine bass- the lute music is naturally more full-blooded.
The distinguished Italian lutenist, Federico Marincola, plays these works with clear and substantial tone, complete technical security and most importantly, with consummate musicality- to him these pieces are not academic exercises but expressive, human documents. This is clearly a disc that is primarily for devotees of early plucked-string instruments, but it should give much pleasure to anyone who is in tune with early renaissance music. The performances, annotation and recording quality are all of a high standard.'
