This is a recording that is likely to have wide appeal, though perhaps not for the devoted collector of the guitar on disc, who will already have most of the 23 items on his shelves. The Preludes of Villa-Lobos are separated by other pieces, of which the longest lasts just over four minutes, and every one is immediately attractive. Most are staples in the diet of the student, amateur or up-and-coming professional, and those which are not might easily become so. Sollscher is one of the most refined and musical players around, and these are immaculate performances, marked by technical perfection, superb tone and musicality that is free from mannerisms. In short, they are models for all who possess a guitar and the ambition to play these pieces as they deserve to be played. Of course, as Billie Holiday said, ‘The music comes out differently every time. If it doesn’t, it’s not music, it’s close-order drill,’ but these are admirable guides to the territories of these popular works, from which everyone can learn something of value – and the recording itself is beyond reproach.'
