Records of early keyboard music can often be rather daunting affairs. It is far from easy to listen to, for example, four sides of music from the Fitzwilliam Virginal book with due care and attention to detail, let alone actually enjoy the experience. So, a specialized taste perhaps, or is it simply that most of the repertory is really for performers rather than listeners, domestic music that was never intended to be solemnly heard as a string of pieces played one after the other? In fact, early seventeenth-century keyboard music spans the range from simple pieces written for amateurs, to brilliant virtuoso works full of power and drama, and those who find it hard listening might well start with this new record.
Robert Woolley, now in charge of early music at the Royal College of Music, is well known for his concert performances and broadcasts, and in particular for his record of Francois Couperin's Ordres. His characteristic mixture of judicious attention to scholarly matters and an ability to allow the music to speak clearly for itself is in evidence in these beautifully—crafted and carefully thought-out performances. At times one could do with a little more poetry, a little less restraint perhaps, but the toccatas in particular are executed with a strong sense of improvised invention which is at the heart of the style. Not the least interesting aspect of these performances is the instruments on which they are given. Except for the first three pieces on the second side (beginning with the ''Aria detta la Frescobalda'') which are performed on a virginal of 1589, everything is played on a Venetian harpsichord of 1605. Both are the work of the same maker (Giovanni Celestini), and are kept in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, where the recording itself has been sensitively made in a gentle and not overly resonant acoustic.'
