It is extraordinary how often Tortelier goes for and gets an accomplished fluid line in the Rachmaninov; and if the Falla sounds more often Manchester than Moorish, hopefully I won’t seem more patronizing than praising in noting a level of execution – given that these are presumably un-patched concert tapings – that we might take for granted in so-called classic recordings from a few generations ago. Britain’s distinguished music school does itself proud, and the natural sound tells it all without false flattery. '
