The music for this film owes its dues to the composers who were writing during Victoria’s long reign, as well as to Handel, whose anthem Zadok the Priest appears at the opening of the CD, and Purcell, represented by his Cold aria from King Arthur. The composer Ilan Eshkeri acknowledges his debt to them and encourages the listener to seek out their music in the original forms. Most of his arrangements, and those by other hands, don’t offend. Some come off well, such as the Paganini Waltz by Johann Strauss the elder, played with a fine swing; others seem rather unnecessary in their new garb, such as the Serenade for Strings by Dvorák. The Purcell aria, sung by William Purefoy, sits rather well in its new context as a dramatic introduction to the cue “Constitutional Crisis”, and Zadok the Priest only palls from being wretchedly overworked in other media from TV commercials to ringtones. One can’t help wishing that the producers, including Martin Scorsese, had commissioned a new piece of work for the screen, especially as Eshkeri’s original work fits the bill well enough; but what we have is likely to appeal at the very least to all those who have seen the film. Sinead O’Connor’s final song, however, seems an incongruous codicil.
