Influenced by Bartok, the Scottish composer Erik Chisholm (1904-65) drew inspiration from his national folk music. This enterprising if uneven disc is occasionally rather monotonous, although the impressive Night Song of the Bards (comprising six nocturnes) contains a wealth of expressive variety. The redoubtable Murray McLachlan is a secure guide, although he is not helped by the hard recording, which lacks depth in the treble register.'
