Author:
Even if you were to venture no further than the first track (the Second Suite’s glorious opening Toccata), you would still have heard some remarkable music. As to the rest – the epic First Sonata, the more folkish Third, the delightful First Suite ‘in ancient style’ and the variously coloured Pieces impromptues – musical surprises emerge with astonishing regularity. The featured repertoire dates the period from 1897 to 1934, from late-romanticism, through impressionism to the folk-music-inspired individualism of Enescu’s late prime. Cristian Petrescu invests each work with a maximum of interpretative character and the recordings are excellent. Unmissable.'
