It is strange to think that sound reproduction is little more than 100 years old and that for the past century the name “His Master’s Voice” has been recognized in the vast majority of households across the country. But, cast your mind back to those early days when the acoustic horn – complete with a turntable driven by a clockwork motor, playing at around 78 revolutions per minute and digging into a shellac disc via a steel needle – was the medium for reproducing music. Very primitive, you think, but then remember that it was much the same system employed for the reproduction of all music recorded on disc until the introduction of Compact Disc in 1983.
The 11 discs are individually packaged in red pochettes, housed in a handsome laminated black-hinged box with slots for each disc, together with a liberally illustrated 96-page booklet which lists the contents and provides thumb-nail biographical facts about the artists. The prologue is by Lord Menuhin whose association with EMI goes back to 1931. Naturally many of the artists appearing on these discs are well known, some less so and others virtually forgotten. To list such a vast array of talent and comment on their performances is out of the question but suffice it to say that the whole project has been splendidly researched and compiled by Tony Locantro, for many years associated with EMI Classics.
Beginning with Edith Clegg singing Schubert’s Ave Maria on October 11th, 1898 and concluding with Roberto Alagna in Werther’s “Pourquoi me reveiller” from the spring of 1995, there are 204 tracks (all previously published) over the ten discs. An eleventh, entitled “A documentary history of EMI Classics”, devised and compiled by Alan Sanders, is narrated by the American baritone Thomas Hampson. Starting with a decidedly unstable recording of Mendelssohn’s Spring Song by clarinettist Adolf Umbach (dating from August 8th, 1898), the contents include Caruso singing Mattinata to the accompaniment of composer Leoncavallo (April 1904), a very ‘live’ acoustic recording of a gas shell bombardment near Lille on October 8th, 1918 (barely a month before the end of Great War) and the voices of King George V and Queen Mary, recorded acoustically in February 1923 – to be reviewed in the first issue of The Gramophone two months later.
With the introduction of electrical recording in 1925 there is a marvellous example of 3000 voices and an orchestra of 500 instrumentalists under Henry Wood in the chorus “Behold the Lamb of God” from Handel’s Messiah, then an experimental stereo recording (using Alan Blumlein’s recently patented system) of the opening movement of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony with Beecham and the London Philharmonic in January 1934. Another example of live recording is displayed by the Quintet from the 1951 Bayreuth Festival production of Die Meisteringer under Karajan. Illustrating the arrival of stereo recording there is an illustration from Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 7 by Malko and the Philharmonia (dating from February 1955), and the first EMI digital recording by Previn and the LSO in Debussy’s Images from July 1979. Thus all the major technical developments are suitably recognized.
In my view, however, this set is equally a tribute to the large number of employees within the EMI Group who have served the Company over the past century. Many of the recording producers (or Artists’ Department representives as they were once called) are relatively well known – David Bicknell, Lawrance Collingwood, Walter Legge, Brian Culverhouse, John Hughes, Victor Olof, Peter Andry, Ronald Kinloch Anderson, Christopher Bishop and John Fraser. The technical engineers possibly less so – Douglas Larter, Robert Beckett, Harold Davidson, Christopher Parker, Robert Gooch, Neville Boyling, Stuart Eltham, Peter Bown, Michael Gray, Martin Benge and John Kurlander, amongst others. But then where would the Company have been without the management skills and expertise of Alfred Clark, Sir Louis Sterling, Sir Joseph Lockwood, Leonard Wood, Sir Colin Southgate and Richard Lyttelton to mention but a few – and their respective staffs? However, the real star in the firmament has to be Frederick William Gaisberg, the presiding artistic genius over the first 50 years of The Gramophone Company. His achievement is mirrored most handsomely in this centenary package.
To end on a personal note: my father recorded for the Company over a 15-year-period and I myself worked for them for over six years. I know from the inside just what a remarkable organization it has been and remains.'
