Welcome as spring's return, Elisabeth Schumann refreshes and charms now as she did in her lifetime, and only a very little of that 'historical adjustment' which normally has to be made when listening to recordings from another age is required here. Perhaps one's first impression may suggest otherwise. Die Post, the earliest of these records, from 1927, sets off at such a fast pace, skimping notes here and there, that its opening activates a jumpy little nerve of irritation: needless, however, for almost immediately a momentary lingering, a shining tone, a delicious inflection; brings the irresistible persoanl touch, and one is totally won over for the rest of this springjourney. Die Vogel chirrups with an extraordinary precision on high; the Lied im Grunen sprints rather than walks through the countryside but is light of foot and sensitively responsive to everything it passes. Not that Schumann is invariably bright and sunny in her colouring. Her Gretchen am Spinnrade is deeply felt, Fruhlingstraum makes vividly sharp contrasts, and Der Jungling und der Tod has a tragic power achieved by imagination working at full stretch within limited vocal resources. The final songs, Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt and So lass mich scheinen, both recorded in 1949, have great depth of feeling and form a touchingly lovely epilogue to the career that is always remembered with such special affection.
Two items will be of particular interest to collectors. Rather surprisingly, Schumann recorded An die Musik only once, in 1936, and though the record was published in the United States and the British catalogue-number DA1525 was assigned it never appeared over here. Its faults seem negligible and the voice is very faithfully reproduced. Die junge Nonne is surprising in another sense, for its turbulence and dramatic intensity would appear to put the song beyond Schumann's range, especially by the year 1945 when she recorded it. The relatively frail voice suggests a girlish fragility and the final Allelujas have a moving simplicity of spirit, but on the whole it is a performance more interesting than satisfying. The original also seems to have been subjected to some slight damage.
Occasionally a breath of surface noise reminds us of the age of these records, but the transfers have been beautifully done and the album stands with its companion. ''The Art Of Elisabeth Schumann'' (HMV EX290541-3, 2/86), as a delightful tribute to a greatly loved artist: a kind of prologue to the centenary which one hopes will be worthily celebrated in two years' time.'
