Much of this music is gently nostalgic and lightly scored and it gains much from the background silence and sophisticated detail at pianissimo level. The dynamic range of the recording is impressively wide when it needs to be and the climax of ''Fairies and Giants'' expands spectacularly while in ''The Wagon passes'' (the Nursery Suite) the crescendo and de-crescendo effects are nicely managed. I noticed a hint of shrillness in the upper range on the LP; this is less striking now: the orchestra is effectively balanced, not too forwardly, yet the wind solos are deliciously clear. A fine and valuable addition to the Chandos CD range; as I said in the original LP review, the coupling is both generous and apt.'
