''The Lord is the strength of my countenance'': hearing Bairstow's vigorous setting of the line one thinks of the strength of his countenance. It was, as legends tell and Francis Jackson's vivid introductory note partly confirms, one that put the fear of the Lord into a great many in his time. The wonder is that his music is characteristically so sweet-tempered, soft and tender in its touch. He could, of course, bring out the trumpets, quicken the pace and fret the Minster's echoes into a delirium of mimicry. But what seems most personal and individual in his music is the quiet mysticism of Let all mortal flesh keep silence, the modestly exercised skill of Jesu, grant me this I pray and the comfortable, judiciously sugared melodic and harmonic idiom of Save us, O Lord.
This is not the first CD devoted to Bairstow; there is one (on Koch) by the choir of St Thomas's, New York, under Gerre Hancock, which unfortunately I have not heard (MK found the singing in their Britten record, 5/91, ''variable''). But the new recital has at least an authenticity of place, coming from the great building where the composer did so much of his life's work, from 1913 till his death in 1946. The organ on which he must have played these very works is the one heard now, its bountiful resources imaginatively employed. The choir, under Philip Moore, has a particularly fine complement of trebles, and sings with sensitivity and, when required, considerable power. In making a few comparisons, I found a shade more affection and detail in St Paul's Save us, O Lord (Hyperion), a sense of rather more immediate contact with the choral sound in Jesus College, Cambridge's Blessed City (Cantoris)—and clearer words in Ely Cathedral's recording of The Lamentation (Gamut). Compensating advantages, in so far as the latter two are concerned, include the grandeur of the York acoustic, the rich colour of its choral tone and the sumptuous nobility of the organ. Dr Jackson's memoir and the reproduction of a blissful nineteenth-century view of the city are added attractions.'
