In reviewing the original LP issue, IM noted the brilliantly lit recording which added to the immediate excitement of the performance, but complained of a ''lack of warmth in the middle register''.
I would agree. This is a refined, superbly controlled performance characteristic of Maazel, but the open innocence of Dvorak inspiration is more happily caught in the fresh and spontaneously expressive Chandos version from Vernon Handley which, as well as providing a worthwhile fill-up in the Nocturne, has fuller, richer recording set more realistically against a bigger, warmer acoustic. The brightness IM noted on the original LP of Maazel is the more apparent in the CD transfer, but the extra openness of the Chandos sound is in every way more agreeable.'
