Previn directs a tautly rhythmic account of this greatest of the symphonies Dvorak symphonies. Rather than creating atmosphere, he tends to bring out the symphonic cohesion. The opening is not so mysterious as Jarvi (Chandos), for example, makes it, but the toughness of the argument is clear at once, helped by the prominence of the timpani. The freshness of woodwind sound helps to bring out Czech flavours, and the horn solo in the slow movement is satisfyingly warm and beautifully phrased. Previn's sharply rhythmic manner brings strong performances of the last two movements too, but being more emphatic than either Dohnanyi (Decca) or Jarvi, he loses some of their lightness—notably in the delectable Scherzo.
The performance of My home—a welcome but none-too-generous fill-up—is tough and emphatic too, though again it misses some of the lilting lightness Jarvi brings in his version coupled with Dvorak's New World Symphony. The Telarc recording is partly to blame. The engineers, working in Royce Hall in Los Angeles, do far better by the Los Angeles Philharmonic than many of their predecessors from other companies. The sound is vivid, warmly atmospheric and with goood detail but high violins lose the bloom which helps the rest. They often sound unflatteringly thin and shrill, which is unfair to a fine string section. Anyone who wants this coupling particularly is not likely to be disappointed, but I would still recommend the others in preference, particularly the Jarvi with its lightness and keener sense of fantasy. It also has a very generous coupling in The golden spinning wheel.'
