Tuckwell's New World is very well played and the digital recording is bright, well balanced and clear. The Largo is the most memorable part of the performance, almost elegiac in its expressive feeling and well sustained. The Scherzo is sprightly and the middle section has a nice light rhythmic touch. But the outer movements—the exposition repeat is included—are straightforward rather than arresting and convey a studio atmosphere. Not enough electricity is generated for this version to be really competitive in a market that within the same price range now includes Karajan on EMI (CDM7 69005-2—to be reviewed later) and Kertesz already announced on Decca's Ovation label (417 724-2DM—also to be reviewed later). Anyone new to this music and buying this CD on impulse will find it quite enjoyable, for Tuckwell's approach is refreshingly direct, but there is more drama in this work than he finds. The overture, which seems to be recorded in a mellower acoustic, goes well enough.'
