Jeremy Filsell greatly impressed me with his recent recording for Herald of music by Tournemire, Vierne and Widor (3/92). This disc only serves to reinforce my high opinion of him. He clearly possesses exceptional musicianship and considerable technical virtuosity. I'm glad I heard the other disc first, however, since this Gamut record is rather subdued and the recording level seems to have been severely repressed, giving the organ much less impact than Herald were able to achieve at the same location.
Again, the Ely organ proves itself a singularly fine vehicle for French music. From the biting chords of the final movement of Evocation to the tender and gentle tones of the gorgeous Antiennes pour le temps de Noel it produces exactly the right kind of sounds and has the added advantage over many French organs of being perfectly in tune and set in an acoustic which enhances rather than obscures it. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the exhilarating Fugue in F sharp minor. Filsell has chosen a programme of late and generally little-known Dupre, much of it appearing in the catalogue for the first time. Moreover, as with the other disc, the music is not only technically very demanding, but musically complex and consequently particularly difficult to bring off in performance. The challenge inspires Filsell to uniformly outstanding performances, which by their persuasive power can only come from someone who not only can play the music, but positively enjoys it too.'
